Webinar Recap: Progress in Reducing Food Waste

April 4, 2025

On April 2, 2025, the Pacific Coast Food Waste Commitment (PCFWC), a public-private partnership working on the West Coast to reduce food waste, and the U.S. Food Waste Pact, the country’s first national voluntary agreement working with food businesses to reduce food waste, were in the spotlight at a joint webinar showcasing new data just released in their joint annual report. The event—presented by PCFWC and Pact leaders from ReFED and World Wildlife Fund—featured a high-level overview of progress in food waste reduction across both initiatives, plus deep-dives into the data, signatory engagement, and intervention projects.

The annual report—and the companion data report—showed that since 2019, participating PCFWC retailers have reduced regional unsold food rates by 30%. This statistic kicked off the data section of the webinar, and it was followed by a look into two new baseline datasets for the retail and foodservice sectors on a national scale. The progress made in Working Groups and Sector Summits—precompetitive collaborative environments that signatories of both initiatives take part in—was also covered, with a special emphasis on the newly launched employee engagement toolkit. This toolkit provides a comprehensive set of resources designed to empower any business to run their own successful employee engagement food waste reduction pilot. A look ahead at the expansion of these programs through the U.S. Food Waste Pact closed out the presentation portion of the webinar before it transitioned into a Q&A session, which covered more in-depth data questions related to the three datasets and intervention projects.
