Who We Are
From producers to manufacturers to retailers, the U.S. Food Waste Pact is a voluntary agreement between signatories across the food supply chain who are committed to reducing food waste.
Led by nonprofit organizations ReFED and World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the U.S. Food Waste Pact aims to bring waste-generating food businesses together to reduce their food waste through the “Target-Measure-Act” framework. Annual data tracking and measurement is core to the Pact’s goals; it allows signatories to understand the progress that they and their peers are making year over year, serving as the foundation for future projects and initiatives. Additionally, the Pact offers collaboration in the form of pre-competitive working groups and sector summits—regular gatherings where signatories can share best practices with their industry peers. And participation in intervention projects that implement food waste reduction initiatives give signatories a chance to pilot new technologies and strategies, addressing the problem head-on.
Where We Came From
Launched at COP28 in December 2023, the U.S. Food Waste Pact builds upon the legacy of similar international and regional voluntary agreements around the world. Inspired by the success of the Pacific Coast Food Waste Commitment—a regional effort of the Pacific Coast Collaborative that has made significant progress in reducing food waste—the U.S. Food Waste Pact is scaling those efforts to a national level.
