FMI — The Food Industry Association

Trade Association

As the food industry association, FMI works with and on behalf of the entire industry to advance a safer, healthier and more efficient consumer food supply chain. FMI brings together a wide range of members across the value chain—from retailers that sell to consumers, to producers that supply food and other products, as well as the wide variety of companies providing critical services—to amplify the collective work of the industry. As the Pact’s first trade association signatory, FMI has prioritized coordinating industry-wide efforts on food loss and waste reduction for over 15 years.

Food Waste Reduction Strategies

  • In 2011, FMI served as a founding member of the Food Waste Reduction Alliance (FWRA)—a partnership also including the Consumer Brands Association and the National Restaurant Association—which works to address the root causes of food waste within food business operations and secure pathways to donate or recycle unavoidable food waste.

  • The association developed—and continues to encourage—the adoption of standardized nomenclature for industry use regarding product date labels, specifically “BEST If Used By” and “USE By.”

  • In partnership with USDA and Cornell University, FMI supported the development of The FoodKeeper, a consumer-facing mobile app and online database containing information about the safe storage, handling, and preparation of food to help mitigate food waste in the home environment.

  • FMI regularly convenes member company sustainability professionals through its Sustainability Executive Committee to coordinate industry efforts on operational and supply chain food waste mitigation efforts, among other topics.
