Starbucks Coffee Company works to divert food from waste streams and help alleviate hunger in the communities they serve. They have set a commitment to reduce waste sent to landfill from stores and operations driven by a broader shift towards a circular economy. The commitment is inclusive of food and organics waste. Starbucks receives a U.S. federal tax benefit for every pound of food donated, and they are committed to reinvesting that benefit back into their food waste reduction and hunger relief efforts. To date, they have reinvested $93M+.

Food Waste Reduction Strategies

  • Donating unsold food via Starbucks FoodShare food donation program, which is available at 100% of US company-owned stores. Since 2016, they've diverted 81M pounds of edible food from waste streams and donated 67M+ meals.

  • Offering coffee grounds for gardens and compost through Starbucks Grounds For Your Garden program at participating coffeehouses

  • Utilizing commercial composting in operations and stores, where available
