The U.S. Food Waste Pact’s Town Hall on October 16 was an opportunity for attendees to learn about the initiative—which launched last year at COP28 in Dubai as the first voluntary agreement fighting food waste on a national scale—and gave attendees the opportunity to weigh in on the Pact’s current and future direction. The presentation featured an overview of how the Pact is structured, what projects have been done and are in the pipeline, and how the Pact intends to expand its reach and impact. Attendees were also given several opportunities to respond to questions and ask the Pact team some of their own.

During the session, ReFED’s Jackie Suggitt explained the food waste problem and the opportunity that this national voluntary agreement has to address it. After sharing the Pact’s history, World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) Anne Garsztka walked attendees through current signatory working groups and intervention projects, detailing the progress in employee engagement pilots and whole chain pilots, specifically. WWF’s Tara Dalton explored the future of the Pact by describing plans to expand engagement with various stakeholders. The panelists held an extended question and answer session that covered data analysis, food waste policy, and the expanding reach of the Pact in the larger food waste ecosystem.

Additionally, announced in the Town Hall were new signatory—Health Care Without Harm—and a new Advisory Council, composed of ten leaders in foodservice, retail, government, academia, and more.
