Kroger’s Zero Hunger | Zero Waste impact plan is their mission to build communities where no one goes hungry and no good food goes to waste. They focus on reducing food waste in their stores every day by selling through as much food as possible, offering markdowns to make fresh food even more affordable, safely donating extra food to their communities, and directing more of any remaining food waste to food waste recycling and de-packaging programs. They focus on continually reducing food waste generated in their stores and increasing food waste diversion from landfills over time.
Food Waste Reduction Strategies
Since 2017, Kroger has recovered and donated more than 815 million pounds of extra food from retail stores and other facilities to local hunger relief agencies.
Today, 97% of Kroger stores across the country participate in food waste recycling programs to keep more food out of landfills, including animal feed, composting and anaerobic digestion.
They achieved a 31% increase in their store food waste recycling rate to date, moving from 27% in 2017 to 58% in 2024.
They improved operational waste diversion to 85% company-wide in 2024.
